The unique lock showed this cell's security had been updated recently. Deciding quickly, Kelly jerked the electronic key from its hook on the wall opposite the cell door, jamming it into the opening to release Perry. "Dammit, Davin," she cursed. He better be worth it!
"Quickly," Kelly said, motioning to the corridor off to the right. "I overheard them planning to kill me. Let's go!"
"Wait." commanded Perry, as he dropped to one knee beside her. He used his teeth to rip a notch in the waist of his shirt and tore off the bottom three inches all around, then used the strip to tie his handkerchief tightly to the oozing gunshot wound on Kelly's leg. This inadequate attempt at first aide would not hold for long, but it gave them a chance. "Okay, now."
With Kelly in the lead the two made the turn into the darker corridor and ran. Making random choices at intersections, they continued. At first they thought they could hear the sounds of men following. 200 yards down the hallway narrowed, and the carpeting and wooden panels dressing the wall stopped. The tunnel continued another quarter mile fairly straight, then the tube turned left and began rising slightly. At the next bend Perry grabbed Kelly's arm as she swayed, clutching the stone wall. "C'mon," he coaxed, gently, and they continued climbing. "Just a little farther." Perry's arm wrapped around her torso, providing support.
The smell of blue-flower tea awakened her. Looking around, she could make out the dim shape of Perry's back before a tiny fire inside some natural chamber. She felt pain and touched the injury on her leg. The rough bandage had been replaced with a warm, acrid-smelling poultice, and the leg elevated. Her clothes were gone.
"My clothes?" she croaked, and Perry turned.
"Ah, finally, you are awake. You had me worried." Perry rose, smiling, and brought her a tin cup filled with the hot floral "tea." "How's the leg?"
"It hurts," she said. "Where are we?" And then, more sternly, "And where are my clothes?"
